If someone had told us just a few years ago that we would be attending the launch of a Ford Mustang that, in addition to being electric, was an SUV, we would not have believed it. But today, we’re no longer surprised, even though this isn’t a real Mustang, even though that’s its name.
Ford introduces the new Ford Mustang Mach-E, taking the name once used by some of the most desirable versions of the American pony and applying it to a completely different concept, that of an electric crossover. But after the initial surprise, the question remains, what is the Ford Mustang Mach-E?
What is the Ford Mustang Mach-E?
The Ford Mustang Mach-E is a high-flying electric crossover, which with 342 kW (465 hp) of power seems to be better suited to compete with products like those from Tesla, than the new wave of generalist, and also premium, electric SUVs that are emerging in Europe. Ford plays on performance, a futuristic and technological approach, and an image that we usually associate with its most famous sports car, the Ford Mustang.
And the result is what we see in these images. What would have seemed crazy to us in the past seems to make sense today, judging by the success of brands like Tesla.
The aesthetics of the Ford Mustang in an electric crossover
As you can well imagine, the Ford Mustang Mach-E does not have a coupe-like bodywork. Ford has attempted to stylize the traditional crossover body to give it a sportier, coupe-like appearance, with a slightly drooping rear window as an extension of the roof. At the rear, there are light clusters and lamps with a design that resembles that of the Ford Mustang.
At the front, there is no standard grille, but there is the thoroughbred that until now was the hallmark of the Ford Mustang and that for the first time will be shared with an electric car. In the GT versions we will see a kind of grill that tries to resemble the design that we would see in a real Mustang, with a gasoline engine.
The headlamp design also bears some resemblance to that of the Ford Mustang, finishing off a set in which we see how Ford has tried to create a product, an electric crossover, inspired by its famous coupe.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E’s performance
With an electric motor of up to 342 kW (465 hp) and a maximum torque of 830 Nm, whose practical delivery is almost instantaneous, the Ford Mustang Mach-E accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than 4 seconds.
However, Ford will release different versions, depending on its range and the configuration of its electric motors. There will be a version with a longer range and rear-wheel drive, with the electric motor installed in the rear axle, which will deliver 337 hp. On the other hand, there will also be a GT, with all-wheel drive and the already mentioned 465 hp of power.
The rear-wheel drive version of the Ford Mustang Mach-E will have a range of at least 300 miles, 483 kilometers, according to EPA estimates. A fairly accurate figure, pending its official range according to European standards.

Technological, inside and out
If the Ford Mustang Mach-E has a modern design, with some Mustang inspired details, on board the reminiscences of the pony are limited to the thoroughbred that is drawn in the axis of the steering wheel. The rest is a more futuristic environment, in true Tesla style.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E features all-digital instrumentation, with an elongated, horizontal display right behind the wheel. The entertainment system’s user interface and comfort features are provided by a large 15.5″ tablet display.
In the next few days, believe us, we will continue to talk about this car at length. The new Ford Mustang Mach-E is sure to be a talking point.
